A strong cold front is expected to enter the Houston-Galveston area late Tuesday bringing high probability of strong winds and seas through Wednesday afternoon and then weakening overnight into Thursday morning. In anticipation of this frontal passage, a Category I Channel Closure of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) for dredge operations in vicinity of Mile Marker 349 will be planned to coincide with the front in order to take advantage of this window when vessel traffic is naturally reduced by prevailing weather conditions. Anticipated timing of this closure is 0800-1400, Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Use of this time period will facilitate a safe, efficient environment for the dredge work and reduce impact of closures related to this dredge project at the mouth of the GIWW at Bolivar Peninsula. Note that this planning scheme, setting Category I Closures to coincide with weather front passages, will be utilized for the duration of this project at the request of the contractor and in the best interest of the waterway to complete the project and return the GIWW to normal operation in a safe and timely manner. It should also be noted that timing of closures may shift due to actual timing and effects of the weather front. Further, weekend, overnight closures have also been requested by the contractor in order to expedite the project and reduce the overall impact to the mariners operating on the waterway. The first weekend closure is scheduled for 0100-0700, Sunday, November 24, 2024. Duration of the project at this location may be expected for the next 30 days. VTS Houston-Galveston will make updates and notices as needed to the Houston-Galveston Port community related to future closures for this project. Very respectfully, Vessel Traffic Service USCG Sector Houston-Galveston (281) 464-4837 24/7 Watch Supervisor
