Port Partners,

Vessel Traffic Service is experiencing complete loss of radar coverage over the VTS Sector Houston-Galveston Service Area (VTSA). The effect is increased risk with respect to tracking non-AIS vessels that may utilize the channels and waterways of the VTSA in Houston-Galveston. With the forecast of continued showers, thunderstorms, and accompanying inclement situations such as high winds and seas, VTS is unable to provide Navigation Assistance nor reduce risk in the service area when vessels experience loss of AIS or loose barge situations. Mariners are reminded to ensure navigation equipment is fully functional and effectively operating prior to commencing transits. Mariners are also reminded to ensure barge configurations are safely secured and to avoid unnecessary risks in transits such as high/low coupling or multi-barge configurations during inclement weather. VTS Houston-Galveston will implement traffic measures if specific situations develop that warrant them.

Very respectfully,

Vessel Traffic Service
